Electrician general liability, explained for Alabama contractors

Your work is behind the walls, but your liability isn't. General liability helps protect you if a job leads to property damage or injury. AIB is an independent agency, so we compare options instead of selling one company’s policy. AIB will confirm availability for your Alabama business at quote.

Coverage outline

What general liability does for an electrical contractor

General liability helps pay for claims that your business injured someone who isn't your employee or damaged someone else's property, including the cost of defending those claims. Most policies also include personal and advertising injury (such as libel or copyright claims from your advertising) and small medical-payment claims regardless of fault. For electricians, a common claim is a fire or shock traced back to wiring work, sometimes long after the job is done. Products-completed operations coverage responds when injury or damage shows up after a job is finished. Customers and general contractors often ask for a certificate of insurance and may ask to be named as an additional insured. General liability does not cover injuries to your own employees (workers' compensation), your vehicles (commercial auto), your tools and equipment (inland marine) or the cost of redoing your own work.

Common claims for an electrical contractor

Fire traced to your work

A connection you made overheats months later and a fire damages the home or business; completed-operations coverage responds.

Damage while you work

Cutting into drywall, drilling through a pipe or fishing wire behind finished surfaces damages the client's property.

Shock or injury to others

A customer, tenant or another trade on site is shocked or hurt near an open panel or live circuit.

Trips and falls on the job

Ladders, cords and open floor boxes injure a homeowner or visitor.

Advertising injury

A truck wrap, website or ad uses someone else's photo or makes a claim about a competitor.

Certificates and contracts. GCs and property managers often require additional insured status, a waiver of subrogation or primary and non-contributory wording. Those must be on the policy, not just typed onto the certificate. Send us the contract before you sign.

Specialty electrical work? Tell us up front about solar, utility or high-voltage, industrial or new-construction-only work. Those often need a different market than residential and light commercial service work.

General liabilityBOPCertificates on demand

For electricians:

  • Electrical contractors are among the classes Coterie writes most often, on a business owner's policy or general liability.
  • Best fit is small, established electrical contractors doing residential and light commercial work.
  • Certificates of insurance can be issued on demand once a policy is in force.
  • Fast, digital quoting. Coterie says it offers instant quotes and policy issuance for eligible businesses.
  • Certificates of insurance on demand once a policy is in force.
  • Home-based and newer businesses may qualify.

Coterie is not the insurance company. Policies are issued by its rated partner insurers. Coterie does not offer workers' comp or commercial auto; AIB quotes those separately.

Questions

Electrician general liability FAQ

Does general liability cover a fire caused by my wiring?

If a fire from your completed work damages someone else's property or injures someone, that is the kind of claim products-completed operations coverage is built for. Policy wording controls, so we review it with you.

Do GCs require electricians to carry general liability?

Most do. Expect to provide a certificate before you start, often naming the GC as an additional insured. Tell us who is asking and we'll match what their contract requires.

Is my service van covered by general liability?

No. Accidents in your van or truck are covered by commercial auto. If employees drive their own cars for work, ask about hired and non-owned auto.

Does general liability cover my tools and materials?

No. Tools, meters and materials on the job or in your van are covered by inland marine (contractors equipment) coverage.
