What does general liability cover?
A plain-English summary of the standard ISO commercial general liability form (CG 00 01). Your actual policy wording, limits, and endorsements control.
Bodily injury
A customer or passer-by is hurt because of your work or your premises.
Property damage
You damage someone else’s property on the job, like a flooded kitchen or a cracked countertop.
Products & completed work
Injury or damage that shows up after the job is finished and you have left.
Personal & advertising injury
Claims like libel, slander, or using someone else’s idea in your ads.
Medical payments
Small medical bills for someone hurt at your location, regardless of fault.
Damage to rented premises
Fire damage to a space you rent, such as a shop or small office.
What GL usually does not cover: your own tools and equipment, injuries to your own employees (workers’ comp), vehicles (commercial auto), or the cost to redo your own work. We can quote a business owner’s policy (BOP), tools & equipment, or workers’ comp alongside your GL.

Alabama general liability FAQ
What does general liability insurance cover?
General liability helps pay for claims that your business caused bodily injury or property damage to someone else, along with personal and advertising injury, medical payments, and the legal defense that comes with a covered claim. It also responds to injury or damage that happens after your work is finished (products-completed operations).
Is general liability required in Alabama?
Not for every business, but it is often required in practice. Customers, general contractors, property managers, and some permit and contract processes ask for a certificate of insurance before you start. We will help you match the limits and additional-insured wording they ask for.
How fast can I get covered and get a certificate?
For many small trades, coverage can be quoted and bound through Coterie online in minutes, with certificates available on demand once the policy is bound. Risks that need a specialty or E&S market take longer because an underwriter reviews them.
What’s the difference between GL and a business owner’s policy (BOP)?
GL covers your liability to others. A BOP packages that liability with property coverage for your business contents and improvements, in one policy. Contractors’ tools and equipment are usually handled with separate tools & equipment coverage.
I’ve been declined, or my work is higher-risk. Can you still help?
Often, yes. As an independent agency we can look beyond a single insurance company, including specialty and excess & surplus lines markets. Expect a few more questions and a little more time, and we will explain any surplus-lines disclosures that apply.
Which trades do you insure?
We regularly quote remodelers and general contractors, electricians, plumbers, painters, janitorial and commercial cleaning companies, landscapers, flooring installers, and HVAC technicians, along with many other small businesses across Alabama.
